FPSO is the acronym for Floating Production Storage and Offloading. In Chinese, it is fully called   (floating production, storage, and offloading unit). It is vividly known as an 'offshore oil and gas processing plant' and is a core piece of equipment for the development of deepwater and remote offshore oil and gas fields.

???? Core Functions and Working Principles

The core value of an FPSO lies in its integration of functions that traditionally required multiple facilities in offshore oil and gas development.

• Production: It receives mixed fluids (oil, gas, water, etc.) from subsea wells via subsea pipelines, and separates and processes them in the processing modules on its deck to produce qualified crude oil and natural gas.
  
• Storage: The treated crude oil is stored in the vessel's huge cargo tanks. Currently, the maximum storage capacity of FPSOs in service worldwide can reach up to 350,000 tonnes.
  
• Offloading: When a certain amount is accumulated, the crude oil is offloaded via the transfer system to a shuttle tanker that comes alongside, which then transports it to shore.
  

????️ Main Components

An FPSO mainly consists of three major parts:

1. Topsides: Located on the main deck, they are equivalent to an onshore chemical plant. They integrate core production equipment such as oil/gas processing, water treatment, power generation, and heating.
   
2. Hull: Shaped like a very large crude carrier (VLCC). In addition to providing buoyancy and stability, most of its internal compartments are used for storing the treated crude oil.
   
3. Mooring System: This connects the hull to the seabed, 'tethering' the FPSO to the operating area to resist the effects of wind, waves, and currents, ensuring long-term, safe, and continuous production. Depending on the mooring method, it can be classified into types such as internal turret, soft yoke, and hard yoke.

• Strong adaptability: It can operate in a wide water depth range from 20 metres to 2,900 metres.
  
• Mobility and flexibility: It can be self-propelled or towed, allowing it to be quickly relocated to another operating area or returned to dock for maintenance as needed.
  
• Economic efficiency: It eliminates the huge cost of laying long-distance subsea pipelines. Moreover, old tankers can be converted into FPSOs, and the unit can be reused on different fields, effectively reducing initial capital expenditure.
  
• Strong resistance to harsh sea conditions: Designed to high standards, it can be permanently moored and operate continuously in severe weather conditions.
